What is erythritol?

Erythritol is a sugar alcohol and is used as a sugar substitute. Sugar alcohols are actually carbohydrates (but no, they won't get you drunk), according to the FDA. In addition to sweetening, sugar alcohols can add volume and texture to foods, help retain moisture and prevent browning, according to the FDA.

Erythritol is approximately 60-80% sweeter than common sugar, according to the International Food Information Council. As for calories, it has about 0 to 0.2 calories per gram, while sugar has four calories per gram. Other sugar alcohols include xylitol and sorbitol, which are similar to erythritol, only that they have 2.4 and 2.6 calories per gram, respectively.

Erythritol is found in many foods and drinks packaged with low sugar levels, explains Torey Armul, R.D, spokesman for the American Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

So ... Erythritol is a carbohydrate?

Most other alternative sweeteners are also generally much sweeter than sugar alcohols, and come from different sources. Aspartame, for example, is made up of two different amino acids and tastes 200 times sweeter than sugar, according to the International Food Information Council. Sucralose (also known as Splenda) is actually derived from sugar and is 600 times sweeter, while stevia is extracted from a plant and is 250-300 times sweeter than sugar.

Are there any health benefits of erythritol?

Erythritol has no health benefits per se, But when used as a sugar substitute, it helps reduce calories and added sugar in a person's diet, according to Armul. This is because, like other synthetic sugar substitutes, erythritol does not raise the level of blood sugar, nor that peak of blood sugar (and the consequent collapse) that can cause cravings and weight gain .
